Bed Size Calculator: Will It Fit Your Room?

Check Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King beds against your room dimensions. Include a frame allowance to see estimated walking space on each side, clearance at the foot, and a scaled floor plan.

Will the bed fit your room?

Enter 5–40 feet for each room dimension. Use decimals: 10 ft 6 in = 10.5 ft. The bed is centered with its head against the wall.

Frame allowance is added once to the total width and once to the total length.

Measure the assembled bed frame and leave room for doors, closets, radiators, baseboards and furniture.

What size bed fits in a small bedroom?

In a 10 × 10 ft room, a Queen with a 64 × 84 in frame leaves 28 in on each side and 36 in at the foot: a workable compact fit in this calculator. A Full leaves more walking space.

Examples with a 4 in allowance added to mattress width and length. The head of the bed rests against the width wall.

These examples leave the rest of the floor empty. Compare door swings, dresser drawers and nightstands with the remaining space before choosing a frame.

Standard U.S. mattress sizes

Mattress size is the starting footprint. A frame commonly adds several inches, and storage drawers or a Murphy-bed opening arc need additional operating space.

How the bed size calculator works

All calculations use inches. Multiply room dimensions in feet by 12. Add the selected allowance once to mattress width and once to mattress length to estimate the frame footprint.

  • Each-side clearance = (room width − frame width) ÷ 2.
  • Foot clearance = room length − frame length.
  • Fit rating uses the smallest of the two clearances.

For a 10 × 10 ft room and a Queen with a 4 in allowance: (120 − 64) ÷ 2 = 28 in per side; 120 − 84 = 36 in at the foot.

To check the other wall, swap the room width and length. This rotates the bed placement relative to the room. For total bed height and getting in and out of bed, use the bed height calculator.

How much space should you leave around a bed?

This tool uses 30 in as a comfortable planning target and 24 in as a compact target. It rates the narrowest passage, with the bed centered and its head against the wall.

Comfortable

30 inches or more

Good everyday circulation on the usable sides and at the foot. You still need to account for nightstands and opening drawers.

Workable

24 to under 30 inches

Common in compact bedrooms. Bed-making and two-person circulation will feel tighter, but the route remains usable.

Tight

12 to under 24 inches

The mattress fits, but the room may function poorly. Consider one-side access, a smaller bed, wall bed, or storage arrangement that opens upward.

Below 12 inches on either side or at the foot is rated impractical. If the frame exceeds the room, the result shows how many inches it is too wide or too long.

Layout assumption: the tool assumes the head of the bed is against one wall and splits remaining width equally between both sides. If one long side sits against a wall, combine that side’s clearance with the accessible side—but keep a safe route from the door.

Measure in five steps

Measure finished wall to finished wall

Take width and length at floor level, where baseboards and heating covers can reduce the usable footprint.

Mark every swing and opening

Measure the door arc, closet-door movement and drawer extension. Sliding doors need less swing space but still need clear access.

Use the assembled frame dimensions

A 60 × 80 inch Queen mattress may sit inside a frame several inches larger in both directions.

Map furniture at operating depth

A dresser is not only its closed depth. Add the open drawer and space for a person standing in front of it.

Tape the footprint on the floor

Walk the route, open doors, and pretend to change the sheets. This catches conflicts that a floor plan can miss.

Bed-fit questions

Can a Queen bed fit in a 10 × 10 room?

Yes, in the empty-room layout used here. A 60 × 80 in Queen mattress plus a 4 in frame allowance creates a 64 × 84 in footprint, leaving 28 in on each side and 36 in at the foot. The calculator rates this as a workable compact fit; furniture and door swings take up additional space.

Can a King bed fit in a 10 × 12 room?

Yes. With the head against the 10 ft wall, a 76 × 80 in King plus a 4 in frame allowance leaves 20 in on each side and 60 in at the foot. This is a tight layout. A Queen with the same allowance increases each-side clearance to 28 in.

How much walking space should be around a bed?

Thirty inches is a useful comfortable target; 24 inches is a compact but workable passage. Below that, daily use and bed-making become noticeably harder.

Does the calculator include nightstands?

No. Subtract each nightstand width from the side clearance it occupies. Wall shelves or narrow floating tables can preserve more floor space.

Should I measure the mattress or the frame?

Use the assembled frame dimensions whenever available. The calculator’s allowance selector estimates added frame width and length. If your frame differs, use its exact dimensions with the formulas above.

What if the bed goes against a wall?

One-side access can make a larger bed workable for one sleeper, but couples usually benefit from access on both sides. Keep doors, outlets and emergency routes clear.
